Founded in 1871 and nicknamed the Magic City for its rapid growth, Birmingham is the heart of Alabama’s largest metro area. The city built its fortune on iron and steel and today has a diverse economy led by health care, medical research, banking and finance. The University of Alabama at Birmingham is the state’s largest employer, and the metro is home to the headquarters of Regions Financial, Protective Life, Encompass Health and Vulcan Materials, and SummitMedia is based there as well. Landmarks such as the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Sloss Furnaces and the Vulcan statue atop Red Mountain tell the city’s story, while Railroad Park, Barber Motorsports Park, Protective Stadium and a nationally recognized food scene keep it growing. A low cost of living makes Birmingham an easy place to live, work and play.
